About Mezzo Music Academy

Established in 2011 on a small scale in a humble building in Kimmage,  Mezzo Music Academy expanded over the years and in 2014 relocated to a larger, purpose-built facility on Greenlea Road in Terenure.

Mezzo Music Academy was founded by Sonya Murphy-Lyons, a UCD Music Graduate with over 20 years of experience teaching Classical Guitar. Along with her extensive background in Sales, Marketing, and Management, Sonya’s passion for music and education has been the driving force behind the academy’s development.

Sonya hails from a musical family, with her father, William Murphy, a well-known songwriter and guitarist, playing a significant role in the academy’s early years. Willie taught at Mezzo for over 10 years, leaving a lasting impact on the school and its students before his untimely passing in 2021.

Our mission is to inspire a lifelong appreciation for music in every student, regardless of their starting point. We provide a warm, supportive environment where students (from beginners to advanced musicians) are encouraged to explore their musical potential and express themselves with confidence.

Our carefully selected teachers are not only experts in their field but are also dedicated to building meaningful connections with each student. By matching students with the teacher who best suits their personality and learning style, we foster strong relationships that enhance the learning process and create an enjoyable musical journey.

At Mezzo Music Academy, we believe that music is for life. Whether you’re just starting out or refining your advanced skills, we are here to support and inspire you every step of the way.

Why Music?

There are many benefits to learning a musical instrument from a young age and playing an instrument (or studying voice) gives your child a chance to experience learning in a whole new way.
In the last decade, neuroscience has discovered that music promotes brainpower.
While listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, learning to actually play music can enhance spacial reasoning, verbal comprehension and the ability to process information at a faster pace. It gives children a greater edge when it comes to paying attention in school, and a better memory overall. Interestingly, these benefits last well into old age.
